Desire Riviera Maya vs Desire Pearl: Which Resort Is Right for You?

Honestly? I completely understand the conflict. Both are Desire Resorts with all the promise of a luxurious all-inclusive clothing-optional vacation where connection is the whole point. But they absolutely are not the same experience.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Desire Riviera Maya (our first Desire trip was actually for our 20th anniversary seven years ago) and let me tell you, we were hooked. We've also visited Desire Pearl on day passes (twice!), and we have so many friends who've stayed at Desire Pearl over the years that I feel like I can have an informed opinion at this point. So consider this your insider guide.

The Resorts

Desire Riviera Maya has grown with the addition of Eden. It has largely kept that intimate, lush feel that made us fall in love with it in the first place. It's a smaller property (around 200 rooms), which means that by day two of my trip I know everyone at the resort. The grounds are gorgeous, full of winding paths, tropical greenery, and little private nooks that make you feel like you've discovered your own secret paradise. And the staff is absolutely incredible. They take such pride in the property and make you feel like family from the moment you arrive.

Desire Pearl is a larger, more expansive property with bigger rooms, a wider beach, and the world famous hot tub that is truly impressive. It is the focus of the resort social scene.

Bottom line: RM for the energy. Pearl for the upgraded accommodations and spacious feel.

Food & Drinks 🍹

Both resorts are all-inclusive, and neither one is going to disappoint you. According to my husband, Pearl edges slightly ahead on food quality, but I think RM wins. I'm not about to start that argument again though. The restaurants at Pearl feel a touch more refined, but RM has a little broader selection following the Eden expansion.

What I will say about both resorts, without hesitation, is that the bartenders and Playmakers are absolutely the heart and soul of the Desire experience. At both properties, the drinks are great, the service is fast, and the people serving them make you feel like you're the most important people at the resort.

Bottom line: Desire RM wins slightly on restaurant variety, but really? It's close enough to call it a toss up.

The Crowd & Social Scene

Here's where things get interesting, and where your decision might actually get made.

Desire Riviera Maya draws a younger, more energetic crowd in our experience. From the moment you step onto the property, people are social, playful, and ready to make the most of every single hour. It's the kind of place where you go to play.

Desire Pearl is a different rhythm. It's quieter, more laid-back during the day, and from what so many of our friends have told us, after the nightly entertainment wraps up, many guests head straight to the hot tub and then off to bed. That is absolutely a valid vacation choice (and for some of you reading this, it sounds perfect!), but if you're someone who lives for the late-night energy, the dancing, shots at the bar and after midnight chats then RM is your place.

One important caveat on Pearl: the experience there depends on the group that is there that particular week. Pearl does more group takeovers, so if there's a group there that is your people then it can completely transform your experience. Always check what group might be at Pearl during your dates!

Bottom line: RM for the party crowd and spontaneous social energy. Pearl for a more relaxed pace and intentional connections within specific groups.

Events & Entertainment 🎉

Both resorts have similar daily event calendars and theme nights. The Foam Party and theme parties in the evenings define the Desire entertainment experience, and both properties deliver!

Desire RM's nightclub scene is where the resorts stand apart. It has an energy that keeps the night alive in a way Pearl simply doesn't match. On the flip side, Pearl's hot tub situation is the social hub of the resort after dark, and it's an experience all its own.

Bottom line: Toss-up. RM for the nightclub, Pearl for the hot tub. Both for the theme nights.

Relaxation Factor

If your dream vacation involves doing absolutely nothing except sipping drinks and letting the world fall away then Pearl is your answer, no contest. It has a naturally slower pace that makes relaxation feel effortless. It's actually become a bit of a tradition for couples to do a few days at Temptation and then drift over to Pearl to decompress.

RM keeps you going until the early hours. That's what we love and hate about it! We've had too many nights where the late night bar tender is going off shift at 6 or 7 in the morning and realize that we may have stayed up far too late!

Bottom line: Pearl for relaxation. RM for those of you who want to sleep when you're home.

The Value Question

Pricing is comparable at both resorts, and they reward those of us who plan ahead. We personally book our Desire trips about a full year out and consistently save over $1,000 by doing so. The earlier you book, the more you save.

So… Which One Should You Book?

Choose Desire Riviera Maya if: You're craving high energy with an exciting nightlife then Desire RM will deliver the kind of vacation that has you dancing at midnight and smiling for weeks after you get home.

Choose Desire Pearl if: You want luxury accommodations, a spacious setting, and a more relaxed pace. Or if you're connecting with a specific group for a takeover during your dates.

Or just book both if you have the time and budget that allows it. They each offer genuinely different experiences that are both worth having. We keep returning to Desire RM since that is where we started, but Desire Pearl holds its own magic too.
